Deb Baillieul-Biosketch
October 2009

Deb creates and sells contemporary art quilts-representational and abstract; textured; felted wool; hand embroidered and beaded. She has hand crafted and hand-dyed clothing and accessories: cotton or bamboo socks, silk/rayon velvet scarves, knitted scarves, felted bags, recycled wool mittens, chef's aprons and towels.

Playing with texture and color, Deb creates abstract artworks. Dying, painting fabric, sewing, cutting up what she’s sewn and reconstructing fabric are part of her process. Embellishing, beading, hand stitching and felting finish the work.

Sources of inspiration surround Deb in nature, travel and the children she teaches. Living in Botswana, Africa, on Cape Cod, and being an avid traveler and nature lover provide inspiration in a piece of kelp drying in the sun, and in footpaths on the Kalahari. Many of her works are illustrations of a journey-her journey through this world. Other works represent the wonder of nature – jewel like bugs in a meadow or the many spirals of snails and sunflowers. Found materials add to the inventiveness of her fiber pieces. She often moves outside the square edges of traditional quilting-creating her own boundaries and shapes.

Deb has shown her art at The Camelot Cellars Winery for 3 years. She has entered juried shows at Sacred Threads and at the Ohio State Fair (2007, -08, -09), where she won Juror's Choice Award in 2009. She has shown at the Northwood ArtSpace, High Road Gallery, First Unitarian Universalist Church and in many sights with the Art Quilt Alliance and Clintonville Arts Guild.
